During the holiday season, San Francisco is magical. The city sure knows how to bring life to the holiday season with their festive decor and ambiance. Below I’ve gathered 10 Things You Must Do in SF During the Holidays to get you in the yuletide spirit.
1. Gingerbread House at the Fairmont Hotel
Every year the Fairmont Hotel brings you their 22-foot tall, 23-foot wide, two story gingerbread house. The gingerbread house takes center attention in their lobby along with their 23-foot tall Christmas tree. While you’re there, grab some tea at their Gingerbread Holiday Tea Event that takes place from 1-3:30pm. Make plans ahead for reservations are required for tea!
2. Santa Con
If an all-day drunken debauchery with San Franciscans dressed up as Santa Clauses sounds fun to you, you will enjoy Santa Con. This holiday bar crawl attracts thousands of attendees each year. The day starts in Union Square at noon and the crowd dispurses from there and into bars city wide.
There’s nothing like watching The Nutcracker to get you in the holiday spirit. Transport into a world of magic and imagination with San Francisco Ballet’s 73rd production of The Nutcracker. The production premieres on December 13 and continues to December 30.
For over 30 years, Jerry Goldstein and Tom Taylor has brought joy to the Castro neighborhood with their larger-than-life holiday decor. At Tom and Jerrys’ house you’ll find 8-foot stockings and oversize stuffed animals hanging from the roof, a toy carnival, thousands of bright lights, and a 65-foot tree adorned with ornaments twice the size of basketballs. Santa also makes an appearance, so brings the kids!
This musical production brought to you by the American Conservatory Theatre is a show that you seriously cannot miss! They do a fabulous job in bringing this classic Christmas tale to life!
6. Ice Skating in Union Square/Macy’s Christmas Tree
Enjoy an hour of ice skating in the city’s holiday epicenter! By the ice skating rink you’ll find Macy’s Christmas Tree, which stands 80-feet high and is adorned with 33,000 LED lights.
7. Fisherman Wharf’s Holiday Boat Parade
Every year, over 60 boats decorated with lights and holiday adornments will parade down Pier 39’s waterfront. Take a window seat at a restaurant along the wharf and watch this spectacle unfold.
8. SF SPCA Holiday Window at Macy’s
Every year, the SPCA displays a group of pups and kittens in Union Square Macy’s window that are available for animal adoption. It is the cutest thing! Because of the Holiday Window, over 8,000 pets have been adopted!
9. Embarcadero Ice Skating Rink
The Embarcadero Center also has a skating rink that opens from November through early January.
10. 68 Castro Street
Castro Street is home to another house that displays amazing Christmas decorations. It’s definitely worth checking out.
