After waking up on a Sunday morning from a drunken evening, my stomach was grumbling for some hearty breakfast, STAT! So my girlfriend went surfing on Yelp in hopes of finding a place that neither of us have been to. I knew finding a good breakfast/brunch restaurant on a Sunday morning wtih a short wait was impossible. We found Stacks and jumped in the car as soon as possible. By the time we hit the road, it was 11am, which is prime time for Sunday Brunch-ers. I was sure that we would be waiting for a minimum of 1 hour, and my stomach (and my hangover) wasn’t going to endure a long delay.
When we arrived, we put our name on the list and they kindly told us that the wait was going to be between 10 to 15 minutes. I bet you could imagine how delighted I was to hear that! During your wait, they generously offer complimentary water, coffee and iced tea. The coffee definitely help aid the strong headache I was experiencing.
As promised, we were paged via microphone within 15 minutes and a host seated us at our table. The restaurant is on the larger scale which allows them to accomodate more customers at a time. No wonder the wait was so short! The interior is adorned with large Grecian inspired paintings and vase.
Stacks has a pretty large menu offering a variety of old-fashioned American classics: pancakes, omelets, scrambles, skillets. On their lunch menu, there is a selection of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and soup. A selection that is not so American are the crepes, which Stacks offers sweet or savory.
Between the three of us, we ordered five plates of food. I ordered the Banana Pecan Waffle, and the Chorizo Scramble. My girlfriend leaned towards the lighter side and ordered an Egg White Scramble and the Banana Macadamia Nut & Coconut Pancakes. On the other hand, my guyfriend decided to misbehave and ordered the Carnitas ‘Savory’ Pancake. I repeat–CARNITAS PANCAKES. Yes sir, as the title entails, it is a pile of barbecued pulled pork on top of pancakes.
My waffle was toasty and had a crunch from the pecans within the waffle. The dallop of whipped cream and bananas slices were the perfect topping. The Chorizo Scramble was definitely hearty. I wish it had more eggs. When I tried my girlfriend’s pancake, I was engulfed with jealously, because MAN was it tasty! The generous mixture of shredded coconut and macadamia in a banana pancake was putting my mouth through a tropical delight. I will be ordering this dish the next time I come in.
As for the Carnitas Pancakes, my guyfriend said it was the best breakfast dish he’s ever had. Because I’m a strong believer in not mixing savory with sweet, I was a bit skeptical. But, surprisingly, I liked it. But Brunch-ers beware–this dish is made for the hungry and the hearty. It is large and meaty. I would suggest bringing an alka seltzer or two.
