Located in Carmel on Mission is a corner restaurant called il Grillo. Il Grillo provides an intimate setting without the razzle dazzle but makes up for it with their authentic rustic italian dishes. Although il Grillo has many delicious dishes dressed with quality local produce and meats, what comes highly recommended by locals is choosing one of their daily-made pasta and pairing it with one of their sauces. I decided to pair my potato ravioli with the wild boar sugo. The owner, Emanuele, personally suggested this pairing. Emanuele was kind enough to greet, host and serve us the dishes himself. The owner definitely did not disappoint with his suggestion. I fell more and more for this restaurant with every bite. I finished my meal with an apricot panna cotta, a “die for” decadent treat.
But what I love more about this restuarant is the Cinderella story behind it. The owner started his culinary entrepenuership by selling his freshly made pastas and sauces at the local farmers’ market. One of the many returning customers made the suggestion to open his own restaurant. A simple advice became a reality for Emanuele. He now owns la Balena, a well sought after italian restaurant. A wait is definitely expected on a weekend night. On the other hand, il Grillo, with fewer seating and a smaller menu, still packs in big taste and is a local’s secret. Not only do you avoid the heavy crowds, but the menu is much more affordable. Affordable prices without compromising quality? Sounds like a win-win to me.
If you’re in Carmel-by-the-Sea and want a taste of Florence, be sure to check out this fine establishment.
