San Francisco is filled with glorious gems, and most can be found in Golden Gate Park! It stretches 3 miles long, so you really don’t have to travel far at all. Alongside nature and flower gardens, you’ll find several art installations throughout the park. Most can be found in the sculpture garden by the De Young Cafe. But tucked far in the back is an art installation by James Turrell that many do not know about. Because it’s so well hidden, I think it’s one of San Francisco’s greatest gems!
James Turrell is an American artist that has outdoor art installations across the US. His art installation plays with space and light. For example, the Skyspace in San Francisco could look one way during the morning, but could look entirely different in the evening. There’s a hole in the ceiling of the Skyspace that is lined with LED lights that alters the view of the sky.
To get to the Skyspace, enter the De Young Cafe from the left side of the building. However, some security guards might advise you to enter through the museum itself. To get the sculpture garden, go through the main entrance is take a left and keep walking until you exit the building. If you’re facing the garden, there is a narrow stone path on the right and there’ll be small signs directing you to the Skyspace. You’ll initially go through a tunnel that goes under a hill to get to the center.
The minimalist architecture is the perfect backdrop for portraiture and even a fashion photoshoot! But CAUTION, I’ve been told by several people that the oil on the walls help preserve the installation, so NO TOUCHING! I KNOW, my hands are all over the wall in the photos. But I didn’t realize this until after.
