From the blazing reds to the deep oranges, experiencing the enduring changes of Mother Nature is so breathtaking. Unfortunately, we don’t get to see these changes in SF, so I take advantage of this time of year by traveling to locations outside of the city. One location that I’ve found surprisingly beautiful during the Fall season is Portland. After visiting for a weekend in October, I am convinced Portland is one of the greatest places to visit for fall foliage in the west coast. If you’re not convinced, I’ve compiled 5 reasons why you should make Portland your next fall foliage destination.
1. Driving to Mt. Hood – During mid-October, snow around Mt. Hood starts to fall creating that wondrous snow cap you see in most photographs. A drive to the base of Mt. Hood during this time is totally worth it.
2. Less tourists – Portland is known as the wettest city in the USA because it brings in 43 inches of rain each year. Rain season starts around October which scares away most tourists. I find this favorable because the city is a lot more quiet and you can submerge yourself into the city like a local.
3. Columbia River Gorge – Take a day to drive on Highway 35 which is parallel to the gorge, a 80 mile canyon that resides along the Columbia River. Each turn along the highway is like stepping into a painting. You’ll be an awe the entire time. Lush trees with red and orange hues and mountain cliffs too massive to comprehensive takes over all visual stimulation.
4. Multnomah Falls – Because Multnomah is the one of the greater highlights of Portland, it’s pretty busy year round. If you’re able to snag a parking spot (which, by the grace of God, we amazingly did) you’ll be very happy that you dropped by. The orange trees along the overwhelmingly large waterfall is something worth capturing. There’s also a trail that goes over the bridge, into the forest left of the waterfall, and to the top of the waterfall. Along the trail you’ll get a gorgeous view of Columbia River.
5. Beautiful Hikes – there’s something whimsical about taking a hike in a forest that is dewey from the rain. Kara and I took a short hike to a dismantled stone building that has been dubbed the “ivy house” or “witch house.” My favorite part of the hike was seeing the fresh green moss on the trees. Be sure to bundle up, it gets chilly!
And there it is! My reasons why you should visit Portland during the Fall. So…..have you booked your tickets yet!?
