My Stay at The Sandman Hotel

Last weekend, I spent a few nights in a city that is very much under the radar when it comes to Northern California’s wine country. It’s a city rich with history, a growing culinary hub, and is minutes away from the greatest wineries you’ll find in all of California. The city I’m talking about is Santa Rosa. Despite the recent wildfire that devastated much of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa is still very much alive and well, thanks to the spirit of the community and it’s growing businesses. One Santa Rosa business that has received the greatest revival is The Sandman Hotel.

The Sandman Hotel has received a new and improved look. I was fortunate to experience the great hospitality that the hotel has to offer, and I was thoroughly impressed by the service and the updated look. Upon checking in, I was immediately intrigued by the lobby area. The best way I could describe the decor is an eclectic blend of vintage, modern, art deco, and boho chic. It’s like Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie consummated and produced The Sandman Hotel. I wanted to move in. What completes The Sandman Hotel’s signature look is the unique designs and illustrations of Ty Williams. The quirky art can be found on the building, on their merchandise, and iconic poolside neon sign.

We were greeted by the hotel manager, Chris, who was nothing but a ball of sunshine. He was welcoming, helpful, and very enthusiastic about the hotel. His energy was infectious. You can’t help but be excited to stay at this hotel once you meet Chris.

The fun continued when we walked into our room. The ceiling is painted with pastel pink and adorned with a color block quilt. VERY CUTE. Next to the bed are two lounges, perfect for you and your plus one. During my stay, I stayed in a king bed. However, there are standard rooms with queen beds, pet-friendly rooms, and a family suite complete with a bunk bed and a living area. Obviously, The Sandman Hotel is able to accommodate all guests, regardless of their traveling situation.

After having a peaceful sleep, I wanted to officiate our trip with cocktails by the pool. I mean, it’s not truly a vacation until you got a cocktail in your hand, am I right?! In my opinion, the most exciting feature of the hotel is their pool house and bar. At the pool house you’re transported to a little piece of paradise. The wallpaper that matches the vintage couch is too fab to ignore. In the corner is a little bar serving spirits, small bites, and…wait for it… frosé! Although liquor isn’t served (YET!), our bartender, Ben, was able to conjure up a few fantastic cocktails. Scattered across the pool house are classic board games. Between the pool, bar, food, and board games, you have a perfect situation to pass the time.

What’s nearby:
— Looking for a brunch spot? Bird & the Bottle is sure to fit the docket. However, don’t come here expecting a simple breakfast dish. At B&B, they favor international flavors. For example, what you’ll find on their brunch menu a variation of skillets that have Korean, Hawaiian and Isreali influences. That’s a pretty broad selection if you ask me.

— Perch + Plow opened just recently opened on the historic downtown square. They serve international cuisines with a modern twist. Their small dishes were delicious, but what truly stole the show were their cocktails.

— If you don’t mind driving a few towns over, Healdsburg has an adorable downtown area. There you’ll find Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar, a restaurant serving small seafood plates.
