This year Valentine’s Day fell on a weekday. Because Frank and I have busy schedules during the week, we felt the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day was with a weekend staycation. This past weekend we checked into Tilden Hotel.
When we arrived valet took care of our car and the front desk had us checked into our room in a jiffy. When I walked in the hotel I noticed the large common area lined with blue lounges and velvet couches. One section of the common area had a large Jenga blocks and Connect Four for guests to enjoy. I loved the modern art hanging on the wall, especially that digital art that was streaming on the staircase.
The hotel is equipped with the necessary amenities: free Wi-Fi, a 24 hour gym, an event space, an outdoor courtyard, and an on-site cafe and restaurant for your dining needs. The hotel offers standard double rooms, deluxe queen rooms, deluxe queen rooms, junior suites, and a penthouse rooftop suite. During our stay, we stayed at the junior suite.
The suite offers a living space with couches and plasma television that is separate from the bedroom. The bedroom had a fridge stocked with beverages and snacks that are available for purchase. Both the living area and the bedroom has a light ambiance. The walls are painted in a pastel blue and display floral art. In contrast to the rest of the suite, the bathroom displayed a darker ambiance with it’s black and white subway tiles. The bathroom was rather large and I loved the modern ambiance. However, I felt the overall suite lacked cohesiveness in the decor.
That evening, we went downstairs to grab cocktails and dinner at their on-site restaurant, The Douglas Room. We loved the speakeasy style of the dining room. We found a table in the corner of the restaurant, got seated, and quickly scoped out the cocktail menu. We’re both bourbon fans so ‘What About Bob’ quickly caught our eye. This bourbon cocktail has suze, orange liquor, sherry bitters, and topped with drops of citrus oil. It was so delicious. Along with our cocktails we ordered a generous spread of food. Amongst the sandwiches and salad we order the true winner were the duck confit wings. The loved the orange glaze on it, and the chilis gave the perfect spicy kick at the end.
After heading to another bar after dinner, we decided to head back to our room to hit the sheets. We slept well without any disturbances. We didn’t hear any noises from neighboring rooms or street traffic. Before we checked out we made sure to stop by the Tilden Cafe, which is perfect for a grab-and-go breakfast. There’s a barista who can make an array of espresso drinks. There’s also snacks and pastries made fresh from Jane’s if you’re looking for a small bite. Unfortunately, the cafe lacks seating around but the communal area served as a great space for guests to enjoy their breakfast.
Overall, our stay was great. I loved the communal area, the art, and especially the on-site restaurant. However, I wish the style of the lobby area was reflected in our junior suite. The decor of the junior suite was delicate, while the rest of the hotel was modern. I really appreciated the valet parking as well. The valet parking comes with a charge, but it’s worth it because of the lack of street parking in that area.
