Bring on the Pumpkin Spice Lattes because Fall is officially here! During this time of year, most individuals are saying ‘bub-bye’ to summer hats and saying ‘hello’ to leather booties. But lucky for us San Franciscans, this is the beginning of our Indian Summer. Unlike your typical summer, San Francisco usually sees fog and cold days during the summer months. But after those dreary months we’re blessed with a few months of sun and warmth.
In lieu of our Indian Summer, I decided to invite over a few of my best girlfriends to enjoy some white wine, small bites, and rooftop sunset views. As you may know, I have an infinite love for Spain and the culinary indulges it has to offer. While I was there I drank a copious amount of wine. So, for this happy hour I decided to share my love for Spain by serving Rueda Wine. Rueda Wine is a Spanish white wine derived from Verdejo grapes grown in the Rueda region of Spain. Verdejo grapes are not grown n the United States as they are indigenous to Spain but fortunately, Rueda wine can be found at your local wine shop by looking for the Rueda logo on the back or on wine.com (use promo code RUEDA for 10% off!).
If you’re a fan of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, you’ll really enjoy Rueda wine. They are similar in that they are both light-bodied, but it’s flavor profile puts it in a league of its own. You’ll taste citrus notes, along with hints of grapefruit, fennel, and peach. If you’re pairing it with food you should pair it with a dish that has hints of lime. For example, ceviche or lime chicken would taste great with a Rueda wine.
I know what you’re thinking: “Why are you serving white wine during the fall?” I know it may seem like I’m refuting seasonal appropriation, but lets face it–white wine is great year round! The feeling of something crisp and refreshing hit the tip of your tongue is comforting regardless of what time of the year it is. And what you may not know is that white wines can be complimentary to some of the heavier meals you would see during the fall/winter. For example, try drinking white wine with roast pork or roast duck. You’ll be surprised on how well they taste together.
So if you’re thinking of steering away from whites because of the fall season, DON’T. Indulge and start doing so with a Rueda wine, a white wine that is produced only in Spain. Have some friends over and they’ll be impressed by your “worldly” selection. Having your friends dub you as the “wine enthusiast” of the group doesn’t sound bad does it?
xoxo Justina
Big thanks to Ribera y Rueda Wine for providing the wine!
