Thanks to one of my friends, I have gained a new appreciation for iced coffee. I’ve always preferred my coffee hot and first thing in the morning. But lately I’ve been favoring iced coffee. It’s cold, refreshing, and you can actually savor the flavor more. Because iced coffee is less acidic, the coffee’s intricate flavors are more distinguishable. Also, the decreased acidity makes it safer for your stomach and teeth (more info can be found here).
Since he and I had Thursday off, we decided to discover a cafe together. Upon internet surfing, we found an appealing spot in the Mission called Tiny Warrior Coffee. Located on 18th Street, this neat find serves signature iced coffee drinks and retails an array of camping products. Unlike most coffee shops that dump ice and coffee into a plastic cup, Tiny Warrior has incorporated the art of mixology into their coffee making.
When we entered, we were greeted by Glen, the barista, and the owner’s dog. Glen was warm, friendly and helpful. He suggested the Vietnamese Coffee with Muddled Mint to my friend and I decided on the Morrocco. The Vietnamese Coffee was lightly sweetened with a kick of crushed raw mint. The Morocco reminded me of a lightly sweetened Chai with more emphasis on the cardomon. The cinnamon shined through with every sip.
After grabbing a few tacos in the Mission, my friend and I headed over to Outer Sunset to satisfy our sweet tooth. If you head to 19th and Irving and stay within 19th and 28th, you’re sure to find something that will fulfill your dessert needs. You can head over to Quickly’s and grab a boba drink with some eggettes, or head one block up to Sheng Kee Bakery and grab coffee after choosing from an assortment of pastries.
However, there was one place that had always piqued our curiosity–Swich. They specialize in ice cream sandwiches, but these are no ordinary ice cream sandwiches. They’re all made with cookies in the shape of a square. You can choose from one of their signature sandwiches, such as “goldilocks” –butterscotch cookies with coconut ice cream smashed in between. Or you can create your own by selecting cookies, ice cream flavor, and dippable toppings. They also have a selection of pastries and pies that are also perfectly shaped into a square. If none of these are to your liking, there are puddings that may be more applicable to your appetite.
If you’re craving something more savory, try one of their hot sandwiches along with a cup of their pour over coffee!
